    Plymovent Stationary Filter Units FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and running stationary welding fume filter units.

What is a stationary filter unit and where is it used?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A stationary filter unit is a fixed fan and filter assembly that draws contaminated air from one or more extraction points, cleans it and either returns it to the workshop or discharges it. Sizes range from small units serving a single arm to central systems serving a whole workshop.

They suit permanent welding stations, production lines, cutting tables and general fume and dust control.

What are the main filter types, and how do they differ?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Most welding fume units use a filter material, often pleated cartridges, to trap particles. Some are replaced when full, while others clean themselves in place with pulses of compressed air that knock dust into a collector. Other designs charge particles and collect them on plates that must be washed or wiped clean.

The right choice depends on the fume, how many hours the unit runs each day and the maintenance you can carry out. Check the data plate and manual of the unit you are considering for the filter type, the cleaning method and the service interval.

    Single-arm units, multi-arm units or a central system - which should I choose?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A single unit with its own arm is simple and good for one station. Several arms on one unit work if the stations share a space and are not all used at once. A central system with ducting suits many stations and gives one place to maintain the filter.

Central systems need more design work and ducting, and their balance matters, but they can be easier to look after in a large workshop.

What electrical and compressed air connections are needed?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Larger units normally need a three-phase supply, while smaller ones may run from single phase. Self-cleaning types need a supply of clean, dry compressed air at a stated pressure, unless the unit has its own compressor.

The data plate and manual list the requirements. Electrical connection and air connections should be made by competent people, and the fan rotation should be checked at commissioning.
