The cyclone spark arrester, SparkShield, is a fire safety product, developed to reduce the risk of fire and to increase the filter’s lifespan. SparkShield prevents sparks, spatters and cigarette butts from entering the ductwork in welding fume extraction systems and reaching the combustible filter cartridge.

In addition, SparkShield is also very suitable as pre separator for high-dust applications.

The SparkShield comes with a dustbin of 13 and 27 litres. The distance between the spark arrester and dustbin can be enlarged by a duct of Ø 200mm.

    Plymovent Spark Arrestors FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and fitting spark arrestors for fume extraction ducting.

Do I need one if I only weld?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

It depends on the process and the risk assessment. Arc welding produces spatter and some sparks, but most are caught near the source. Where welding is mixed with grinding, gouging or cutting, or where the duct is short and the filter is close to the work, sparks are more likely to reach the filter.

If there is any doubt, fitting one is a sensible precaution. Ask our team to help you choose.

How do I choose the right size?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The arrestor must match the duct diameter and handle the airflow of the system. Duct sizes are normally quoted in millimetres or inches, so measure the duct you have and check the airflow range in the manual.

An arrestor that is too small adds resistance and reduces extraction, and one that does not match the duct will not seal properly. Choose the size that matches your duct and the system airflow.

Does it need to be emptied or cleaned?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Yes. It collects heavy particles and sparks in a collection area, which needs emptying at intervals set by how much dust the process makes. If it fills, it stops working properly and can restrict airflow.

Allow the contents to cool before emptying, handle them with gloves, and dispose of them as the manufacturer and local rules require. Keep a record of when it was checked.

Will it slow the airflow and weaken extraction?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Any component in a duct adds some resistance, and the effect depends on the design and how clean it is. A well-chosen arrestor of the right size has a modest effect, but a dirty or undersized one can cause a noticeable drop.

When designing or changing a system, include the resistance of the arrestor in the airflow calculation, and have the extraction tested afterwards.
